Ultima VIII: The Lost Vale

1994 - Developed by Origin Systems; Produced by Electronic Arts

Introduction

The Lost Vale was a planned add-on for Ultima VIII: Pagan, but it never saw the light of day, because Ultima VIII: Pagan was not as successful as expected. The decision to cancel the add-on was made in September 1994, which was around the time of the originally scheduled release date. Because of this, there were always rumours saying that The Lost Vale was fully done and ready for release. Now, more than a decade later, this has been finally confirmed by Sheri Graner Ray: “Lost Vale was completed and ready for gold master. In fact, it was on the eve of sending it into duplication that the call was made to cancel it.

Moreover, a unique Ultima VIII: The Lost Vale game box, whose authenticity was confirmed by former Origin Systems employee Denis Loubet, surfaced in September 2005. It was sold via eBay to a German collector for a final price of almost 2000 US$ shortly after. See the “Box Art” section for pictures. The game itself, however, seems to be lost forever. The developers at Origin Systems barely had a way to back up their machines at that time, so there is not much hope that a copy survived.

What else do we know about The Lost Vale? Well, according to Origin Systems, the add-on would have been accessed through the locked double-doors in the cave with the “Hammer of Strength” (replaced by the “Bonecrusher” in the updated version) on the Plateau. The press release from August 28, 1994 reveals some information about the plot:

Press Release

Hidden World Unveiled in The Lost Vale

(AUSTIN, TX) So, you thought you’d been everywhere and seen everything while playing Ultima VIII: Pagan. This fall you’ll be able to explore a land you never knew existed in Pagan when you play The Lost Vale, the “add-in” game to the latest adventure in the Ultima series. ORIGIN plans to release The Lost Vale during the first half of the fall.

In The Lost Vale, you’ll discover a forgotten valley created hundreds of years earlier by the Titans of Earth and Water. The Titans imprisoned their enemies inside this hidden world, when they commanded the walls of the valley to rise in the largest tomb ever created. As the Avatar, you’ll realize the secrets of this lost civilization could lead to powerful alliances in your ongoing struggle against the evil Guardian. You’ll battle new monsters unique to The Lost Vale and you’ll search for magic items and acquire increased stats you can use in the outside world of Pagan. There’s the City of the Ancient Gods, which is suspended in clouds. There you’ll look for advice that could help make you one of the most formidable beings to ever set foot in Pagan.

The Lost Vale will add several hours of game playing to the world of Pagan. And since it’s an “add-in” disk, you don’t have to finish Pagan in order to explore The Lost Vale. Just install it and begin your journey inside this game within a game.

Current system requirements for The Lost Vale are:

More "Lost Vale" Plot Details

Written by Sheri Graner Ray for pcGTW, November 2005

The story of Lost Vale was that a group of people had been shut off from the main population of Pagan when the Ancient Gods disappeared. They were isolated for a very long time. However, during this isolation a terrible tragedy involving the deaths of two young boys had befallen them. This tragedy caused a schism in the population with each side blaming the other for the deaths. Neither side had spoken to the other for a decade. It was up to the player to “awaken” the Ancient Gods and heal the schism between the people. To do this, the player had to ascend to the very cloud city where the Ancient Gods were believed to live. There, a terrible surprise was uncovered. The Ancient Gods were not asleep, but actually had been imprisoned. The player had to figure out how to release them. The cloud city appeared abandoned, but was full of traps and tricks and was very dangerous.

As a side note, it was for this add-on disk that the “tiny-tar” spell was developed. This was a spell the player would be able to cast upon him/herself and make themselves shrink. I believe this was developed by John Watson. We got such a kick out of a teeny tiny avatar running around the world that we worked it into the plot line. At one point, to get into the ruined temple, the player had to cast the tiny-tar spell and creep in through a crack in the wall. Great fun!

Man, I was in 6th grade when I played U8. I used to think about it all the time (looking back, it was kinda weird how it took over my thoughts like that). I'd love to play the add-in and I own the Ultima collection cd so I do have all the ultimas (I guess I lost the old U8 cd or something, my mom thought it was bad that I played a game with "Pagan" in the title lol)

Thank you for your information, Sheri. It's good to know some people still care about the fans and not only about his or her own business. You may not even know it, but this game (Ultima VIII and the cancelled add-on The Lost Vale) meant, nay... still mean a lot to us, Ultima fans.

Now I understand what DrewBlue meant by "Yoda-Speak"... lol. However, most of the plot remains obscure to us. How or why the Avatar reaches the clouds? Who's that old woman on the screenshots? Is Korick, the believer in the ancient gods, the one who would bind the two broken pieces of the lost gods' shield? Etc...

I would be very pleased if you could do something like Bob White did for Ultima IX: a sort of script of how the original game would look like, the story, the extra features, the characters, the prologue, the epilogue, etc.

Thank you very much for your concern.

Sorry folks. No copy of Lost Vale exists anywhere that I'm aware of. I do not believe it was ever archived and I know no design notes were kept.. mostly cuz there were VERY few notes made when it was in production. And the tiny team that was on it (me, Lisa, Rob and Bob) were completely exhausted from coming off U8 crunch.

I can tell you about that garden screenshot, tho. The Avatar is sent to get a particular flower which is supposed to be a remedy for a sick villager. Actually the flower is deadly poison. You get poisoned and have a time limit to find the antidote. The NPC that sent you (who's name escapes me at the moment) did so because they thought you were a spy for the "other side."

Ohhh and I do remember one more thing. One of the two factions all talked like Yoda. It was funny at first.. but after a couple months of having to write all that dialog, we wanted to shoot ourselves in the head! LOL!

i think it definitely should have been released

In this day and age, you'd think that digital distribution would allow the Lost Vale to live (and profit). It's a real shame if there truly is no copy left of this game. If there is, I just wish that Garriott and EA could sort out their differences for the sake of the fans!

What a shame this is , i might get in touch with one of the former makers of u8 and see if any copies survived. would love to be able to venture out one last time.

I read this now and a tear slides down my cheek.
the expansion pack was completed and never released ?? Words cant express my sadness...
I have grown up with the ultima series. Ultima 4 was my bible on how i should live...
Ultima 6 taught me tolerance for other races.
Now I hear of this SO SAD !!!
PLEASE SOMEONE MUST HAVE A COPY!!!!
release it to the public we need it
the journy must be completed

It's really sad when a game is cancelled, but far more so when the game was actually completed. Games are art, a lot of work go into them so when one is lost forever just because some corporate moron says to cancel it is really sickening.

Ultima VIII: Pagan was one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played through to completion. Wayyyy ahead of its time, which was probably why it suffered for sales (PCs weren't exactly commonplace at the time, especially the required 486). Releasing it later (and complete... although it certainly seemed complete to me) as its creator wanted would have changed the course of history - not just for Pagan but for Ascension as well, which was also way ahead of its time. Damn EA for killing the add-in. Damn EA for rushing the developers who obviously were doing an exceptional job, and damn EA for not listening to Richard and f****** up the Ultima series' future for everyone.

Someone played around with the cheat mode, that's it. No 'Lost Vale' in there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOJZzwLDEUo is this legit? i just found it on youtube, there is nothing really in it to say definitively if it is real or just someone messing with pentagram

Isn't there anyone in Origin who kept a copy of this game....what fun it would be to be able to play it after all this time!!!!!

There is a new project and map tools to make a new world of ultima 8, i'll post link to the sourcefourge project later ;)

If you got a good knowledge about the game and great ideas feel free to join, we already got good programers to setup the game.

Ultima 8 came with the first computer I ever had, and I still have fond memories of it. I can't believe that the Lost Vales was done but they just didn't release it? I know I would be pissed if I had put all that hard work into it.

U8 was the red-headed stepchild of the Ultima series, but I liked it nonetheless. Meeting the other three of the six Zealan Deities was so intriguing that I always wished the Lost Vale had come out.

too bad this never got released... u8 rocked!

I loved the Ultima games, more specifically since the Ultima 7 line (FoV, SI, SS). My favorites would have to be Pagan and most of all, Ascension. Gawd that had a great story to it and the ending? Well, I won't spoil it but definitely movie worthy.

By anonymous on 05.10.2006 02:54 IP: -.-.-.-
I am also very interested in the story line and features. i was wondering submit an section to this page with what you remember. it would be greatly appreciated

DrewBlue,

Could you please share the (as detailed as possible) storyline with us? Or in particular: [eltontakara AT yahoo DOT com DOT br]?

I envy you, since I am a huge fan of Ultima 8. I had to learn a bit of HTML (I didn't want to) just to make my own website on Ultima 8 tricks.

http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/eltontakara/

I always wandered what was the plotline of the add-on and Sheri has finally shed some light on it. However, it still remains vague. Things like: "who is the woman in the screenshots? Is she Mordra?" remains unanswered. I have other queries, but I suppose we can talk about that later.

Thank you!

By DrewBlue on 03.08.2006 21:05 IP: -.-.-.-
This was a great game. I had the pleasure of being one of the few in house play testers. Ill never forget Lisa telling me that the dialoge for the forgotten language was old "Yoda-Speak". Took me a while to get the hand of reading it for testing. It would have sold EA, it would'nt have made a killing but it would have sold. The cloud city was a pleasure to play in, it was bright compared to the rest of U8.

By windowskiller [admin] on 27.07.2006 08:55 IP: -.-.-.-
The rights are owned by EA, so Richard Garriott can't re-release it, even if he would like to. Not to mention that without much doubt no copy of the Lost Vale survived.

Man... It sucks that they didnt release this addon. I wonder, since LB is working with NCSoft (makers of Guild Wars), would he mind making an official re-release of Pagan w/ this expansion? A thing to consider.

By anonymous on 13.06.2006 02:29 IP: -.-.-.-
I wish they had just released the game, i am a huge fan of the game, it was my first computer game ever, and just recently heard about eh add on and i long to play it

Maybe you can make one or two of the MIDI files available to the public? I'm sure a lot of Ultima fans would be very happy if they could hear some of the music composed for this add-on. :-)
