1991 - Produced by Ubi Soft
Light Quest was going to be a nice little platformer with excellent graphics by Laurent Cluzel. It was not only developed for PC, but also for Amiga, Atari ST and NEC PC-9801. After Laurent Cluzel had finished all the graphics, it was up to Alain Fernandes to complete the programming of the game, but he never did. Apparently, he was not able to fix the bugs in his code, which prevented the game from being ready for release on schedule. We do not know how much work was actually done on the PC version. All we currently have, thanks to Denis Lechevalier, is a disk which contains a very early version of the game (almost not playable) and the editor. It probably never got any further than that.

Denis Lechevalier is the one who established the contact to Laurent Cluzel. Laurent Cluzel himself made the early version of the game available, so we have the permission from the guy who did concept and graphics. That's enough for me. As for Alain, I've tried to get in contact with him long before I put this article about Light Quest online, as I wanted to know how far the game got, if he has a newer version, and so on. He did not even bother to reply to my email, nor to my answer to his comment. As for the game itself, the broken graphics is most likely all you'll ever get to see. The screenshots were made "by hand". I had to make a lot of screenshots from the same scene, manually combine the good parts and fix the remaining graphic errors. That early version is really just available for the sake of preservation, it's by no means playable.

Hello windowskiller, Even if the game is very old, it doesn't automatically mean that the developers/copyright holder don't care about their games anymore. For example, DOOM is now over 13 years old and still in stores, distributing remains illegal. Alain already wrote that Light Quest is copyrighted by Ubi Soft or at least by himself. And I guess, he doesn't seem to agree with publishing his unfinished work here. So I would call this a leak, because you didn't get it directly from him or any former employee. By the way, who is Denis Lechevalier? Was he allowed to distribute it? Don't misunderstand, it's very interesting to watch those things (especially if it never appeared before the public), but you should care that it's really okay to publish this, even if it doesn't work. I think, you already got in touch with the developers, but please ask for permission. Alain didn't sound very happy about this. The game itself: How much actually works? In DOSBox, I only see broken pixel blocks dancing through the screen, nothing like the shots above :( Your website: Keep up this work! It's great! :D

Hi Alain, Great to see you here, how did you find this website? I know that Light Quest is still copyrighted by Ubi Soft, but I'm pretty sure they don't care about an unfinished 15-year old game. That downloadable version is not even really playable. We got that version from Denis Lechevalier, and he got it from Laurent Cluzel. I sent you an email with some questions about Light Quest more than 2 months ago. Could you perhaps reply on it?
